In 1933, Hitler was elected Chancellor of Germany after members of other parties who were loyal to the president convinced him that they would be able to control him in that position. Little did they know that this was the worst mistake they could have ever made. When the Reichstag building burned down, Hitler blamed the feared communist party for the incident, and the German press confirmed the accusations. Using his powers as chancellor, Hitler also ordered massive reprisals against the communists. He then continued to dismantle all that remained of Germany’s democratic institutions. On March 23, 1933, Hitler convinced the Parliament to enact the “enabling law.” In essence, this law gave Hitler the ability to do whatever he wanted without the approval of Parliament.
