Somalia, an African Country located between Ethiopia and Arabia, provides a home for 10 million people. Somali’s, Bantu and Arabs are the main ethnic groups. The languages spoken there consist of Somali (official), Arabic (official, according to the Transitional Federal Charter), Italian, and English. Somalia has a huge youth population, 43% of the population is under 30. Sunni Muslim’s dominate the religion in Somalia. Somalia has experienced a lot of political instability within the past decade because of the civil war and the colonization.

The Somali National Movement was a one of the main reasons for the civil war; created by the Mijertyn and Isaq clan members against the Siad Barre dictatorship. . The civil war took place to resist the dictatorship held by Siad Barre, who ruled from 1969 to 1991. Siad Barre was an extremely corrupted president that ran the country for 20 years. His government had no control of the countryside of warring clans, plunging the country into racking social and economic problems. There were many citing of political imprisonment, torture, political killings and discriminations against certain clans. There was no official government within Somalia for two decades; local authorities mainly ran Somalia. The north and south went to war with each other. The civil war had a lot of anarchy, turmoil and faction fighting. During the civil war many Somali’s fled to neighboring countries like Ethiopia and Kenya. Somalia is known as the Federal Republic of Somalia. While the self-declared country, Somaliland is known as the Republic of Somaliland. Somaliland considers themselves the successors of the former British Somaliland Protectorate. The Somali National Movement, which is now Somaliland, went against the dictatorship held by Siad Barre. Somaliland led the separation while Somalia did not want to separate. Their polar opposite views are why they eventually decided to separate. Somaliland has its own government, which is run by the President, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud since 2010. Somaliland’s next elections are set for 2017. Overall, there is little corruption within the government when there is Presidential election. There have been 8 presidents. While the President runs Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has been president since 2012. Their presidential term runs for about 6 years but some Presidents have held office for less time. The separation between the two has a lot to do with tribes and their different views. Somaliland’s government has received no aid because it is not internationally recognized. However, they receive aid from the UN projects, private funding and NGOs.
