In the article on WebMD, in the 1940’s researchers began to use the term autism to describe children with emotional or social problems. For a while many people linked autism and schizophrenia together. The years between 1960-1970 treatments focused on medications such as LSD and behavioral change techniques. Currently, the cornerstones of autism therapy are behavioral therapy and language therapy. The autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability. Each person who has autism acts and behaves differently than one another. There are multiple spectrums of Autism. The spectrum includes autistic disorder, pervasive developmental disorder and Asperger’s disorder. The purpose of this article is to inform people on what autism is and what the treatment options are. This article was just updated this year so the karios of this article is very timely. It is also on a medical webpage which appeals to ethos, because of its credibility. People with ASD often have problems with social, emotional and communication skills. Diagnosing ASD is not like diagnosing if you have the flu or not, there is no blood test. Doctors look at the behavior and development in the child. Most people who develop ASD have no reported family history of autism, suggesting that random, rare, and possibly many gene mutations are likely to affect a person's risk. “Research has shown that intensive behavioral therapy during the toddler or preschool years can significantly improve cognitive and language skills in young children with ASD”. A number of people believe that vaccines that children get within the first 2 years lead to autism because around 2 years is when autism is detected.
