Women are mostly the breadwinners of the family being that they are functioning in a single parent household. According to Understanding families: Supportive approaches to diversity, disability, and risk, 23% of children live with their mother in single parent homes and 3% live with their father, being that many state laws favor women. It is estimated that 52% of African American children live in single mother families compared to the 27% of Latino children (Hanson & Lynch, 2013, pp. 6). Religion in the African American culture is considered an important aspect from birth until death. Many are affiliated with Christian denominations—notably Baptist and Church of God in Christ. Church is a focal point, for emotional support and socialization, where pastors and ministers are seen as teachers, counselors, and kinsmen. They are strong in faith believing no matter the challenges presented in life, it was meant for a purpose knowing “The Lord will provide” through every raging storm.
