“ Distinguishing Cultures” For many people culture is about traditions, beliefs, values and cuisine. All cultures are defined by where they come from, what they eat, and their way of living. The Hispanic and American culture are two of the most diverse among us. Each culture is unique in their own way while they all share one strong similarity. Although Hispanic and American cultures differ in their eating behaviors and lifestyle, they are similar in having family as their main priority. Americans have a preference of fast food meals while Hispanics choose to cook their meals at home. Frozen foods, microwave foods, and packaged foods are at the top of American culture. However, fresh foods play a bigger role in the Hispanic culture. Working around the work schedule for meals is most likely seen in the American culture. Thus resulting in most Americans ending up grabbing a quick bite in the car away from their loved ones. …show more content…
The Hispanic culture believes that the woman stays home, while the man goes out to work. The woman is responsible for the household duties, kids, and cooking while the man works to provide for the family. In contrast, the American culture is more equal between the men and women. Working during the week and being able to enjoy the weekend is mostly part of the Amercian culture. Whereas in Hispanic culture, the weekend does not mean the work week has ended, but continuing. Another difference in the cultures is Americans are encouraged to be more independent and develop their own goals while the hispanic culture is more to the idea of helping one another. Credit cards play an important role in the everyday Amercian life in spite of the Hispanic culture, which usually make cash transactions. However Amy Tan argues, “ Not waste money that way”(254) is a very popular saying in the Hispanic Culture. Hispanics tend to be more reserved when it comes to spending money they know is not
