The legacy of the hippie movement continues to spread throughout our society and it is in our American culture. Due to this counterculture, there were things it opened the gates for unmarried couples, they were more accepted and could travel with and cohabitate with each other. Sexual relationships in regards to homosexuals and bisexuals, often still frowned upon, but became more acceptable as the years progressed. Hippie fashions and their values had a great effect on American culture that influenced music, television, film, literature and the arts. The Civil Rights movement was embraced by both black and white members of the hippie generation the nonviolent Southern Christian Leadership Conference organized a school walkout in 1963 to push for integration in Birmingham, Alabama. More than 2,000 children and teens participated. The walkout succeeded in integrating most of the city's businesses. In regards to the Vietnam War, the hippie generation's anti-war sentiments serve as a lesson to future governments that a war cannot be won when there is strong disagreement among its citizens about the conflict's validity. Inspired by their passion for the antiwar protest, U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin was upset about the oil spill in Santa Barbara that killed off a lot of wildlife that he came up with a campaign. He felt that with the same passion he could put an end to all this pollution. His organization of Earth Day resulted in campus protests and nationwide demonstrations against environmental harm, which we still celebrate
