In “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway his message of the story is that men control and manipulate women in the relationship. Hemingway conveys this message through the relationship of Jig and “the American.” The relationship between them is that he is trying to convince the girl to get an operation which is an abortion so they don’t have to end their fun party traveling life.
The story is about an American and a girl named Jig in which they are awaiting the train in Spain to take them to Madrid. The American and the girl talk about an operation in which he claims to be so easy that it doesn’t seem like an operation at all. The girl has doubts about the operation and asks him if they would be happy after the operation and he says,

She seems to only care about what happens to the American and if he’ll still love her after the operation. The girl seems to really not care about herself as she says, “Oh, yes. But I don’t care about me. And I’ll do it and then everything will be fine.” The American then replies with, “I don’t want you to feel that way.” This seems to be that Jig doesn’t care about herself so she is basically saying she’ll have the abortion because she doesn’t matter, while the man is saying that she does matter and he does care about her. This also seems like it might be Jig manipulating the man into letting her keep the child because she seems to not care about herself and it is making the man worried and telling her that she should worry about herself.
In conclusion, Jig and the American have a conversation about the child and the American is trying to make her get the abortion so he’ll keep his lifestyle of partying and drinking, and Jig also seems to be manipulating the man by saying she doesn’t care about herself and that she’ll get the abortion because she doesn’t care about herself. This is making the man feel guilty and telling her that he does care about her and that if she doesn’t want to get the abortion that they don’t have to because she doesn’t have to do something she feels uncomfortable

Ernest Hemingway’s story “Hills Like White Elephants” is a perfectly simple story on the outside, but when you delve into the depths you uncover hidden meanings, symbols, and a tense situation. As Alex Link, a student from York University, explained, from an onlookers’ point of view there is very little that occurs between the two protagonists. Link describes the encounter as: “a couple has drinks at a train station in Spain and argues about something rather vague” (Link 66). To the untrained eye, this is exactly what happens. But when you take a closer look, we see a couple with a strained relationship discussing a complicated procedure and the outcome of their relationship in the long run.…
