High School Observation

Alone in the school library of Mead High, the students being observed made interesting actions. The students here only ranged from 11th and 12th graders, as this took place during an off block, which are only available to upperclassmen. There were ten tables in the back of the library that students had the choice of. Many were only occupied by one or two students, thought they could hold four. This observation took place before lunch had occurred, but the library at Mead has signs saying, “No Eating Allowed Here.” But of course, that might not stop some hungry teenagers. There were also a few comfortable chairs in the location in front of the table area, but they were unoccupied.

Norms can be defined as, “Something that is usual, typical, or standard”[1]. Many of the students became quiet and calm once they entered the library. It’s typical for a library to be a quiet place for people to read or work on homework and projects for school. These students who can be noisy and rowdy in the hallway transition to the quiet, respectful student the minute they step into the library. Society has created this norm for libraries. When it comes to body/physical space, “the variable and subjective distance at which one person feels comfortable talking to another”[2], students would pick the table farthest away from the others already in the area. As stated before, these students would be alone and want to sit away from everyone, possibly feeling the need for a larger personal space. They may not want to seem as if they’re trespassing on the other students and their groups, due to society putting a taboo on sitting close to people that aren’t friends or casual acquaintances. After conducting these observations, several interesting facts were

This design was done on purpose to promote community and closure. Exploring the theory that design is freethinking and has no walls of blockage. The rest of the room is surronded by large panes of glass to let the natural light in. There's usually six large tables in the room with wood surfaces which bear thousands of scratches from students in the past. In a way it's sort of an unofficial signature left behind, with each mark different than the last.…

They put themselves at risk being asked to leave the library because it is relatively easy to find the source of the disruption. It is clear who caused the sound when everyone is staring at the same person. While their motive sets Troublemakers apart from average students in the library, there are other qualities that differentiate their group from the others. A Troublemaker can be immediately distinguished when silent study begins.…

Whilst observing at Agnew Middle School, I noticed some ways that Mrs.Lane motivated her students. It was almost guaranteed that there would be a test every week, and if not a test there would be an assignment added on Think Through Math. She would assign work on Think Through Math weekly, because if a student failed the Math STAAR (a Texas state standardized test required by the Texas public schools) in seventh grade and did work on Think Through Math weekly leading up to the eighth grade STAAR a higher percentage passed. Neighboring on the tests and homework assigned, Mrs.Lane also motivated her students by giving them opportunities to do test corrections and putting the limit of wrong answers on Think Through Math to seven. She made the…

During the months of January and February, I observed the theatre tech class at Valley Center High School. The tech class includes Edie Reese, Conner Peterson, Madison Isham, Pattanun ‘Bell’ Punjanun, Michael Charvat, Chris Paul, Jacque Toews, Sabrina Gamblin, Ashlyn Pollard, Trace Tobin, Tommy Brown, Janett Duerksen, Kaitie Showalter, and me. We meet everyday during fourth hour, which is from 10:38 to 11:30. I chose my tech class to observe because it is a social group that I see every single day and it is about half the size of my normal classes. We also have some of the same values; we want to build things fast, but also make sure they are built safely and we all enjoy discussing different movies while working.…

For this assignment, I chose to observe the smaller side of the residential dining hall (res) at 9 in the morning. The smaller side of the dining hall is lined with booths on the side wall, back wall, and window side. In the center of the room, there are tables (usually 2-4) clustered in line formation. The booths seem to encourage a more intimate dining setting (if 2 or more people are present) or isolate a single person from the rest of the people present. I observed that this is a place where people both hang out and work.…

Middle Grades are probably the most difficult grades to get through for everyone. During this time of physical, social, emotional, intellectual, and moral development for these students learning about the history of Georgia is literally the last thing they think about, if they even really think about it at all. These students are some of the most difficult students to keep their attention focused on the subject matter at hand, unless of course we are discussing them, then and only then will the teacher get their full attention. During the observation assignment I noticed a few of the developmental theories that correlated with the five developmental stages of middle school students: Bronfenbrenner, Erikson, and Hall.…

When walking down the hall at the end of the day, the sixth and seventh grade locker commons are very crowded and close together. All the lockers are crammed into a little space where over 400 bodies need to squeeze into at one time. Students are shoving and running each other over. A person can barely walk to his or her locker without getting whacked in the face by a backpack from a fellow student. The noise is very loud with shouts of “Move!”…

If CCMS received one million dollars this is what I would improve the cafeteria, update the 7th and 8th grade wing, and sports. I would improve the cafeteria that way it could hold more people that way we don't have to have 1st and 2nd lunches. I would also improve the 7th and 8th grade wing because it's not really the best. First, I would improve the cafeteria. We need a bigger place to eat because everyone is all bunched up and it's way to crowded plus I think this might help other people that are claustrophobic.…

My TE-100 class went to Barr Middle School in Grand Island, Nebraska and Northeast Elementary in Kearney, Nebraska. Due to a conflict I was unable to attend the Barr Middle School visit and went to Walnut Middle School in Grand Island, Nebraska instead. At Walnut Middle School, I observed Mrs. Coble, the seventh grad math teacher. At Northeast, I observed Mrs. Tobey, a fourth grade teacher. After observing both schools I came to the conclusion that the two schools are very different from one another.…

Although Wall High School is an accepting environment, I feel as if we do not offer activities that cater to all students abilities and talents. For instance, in regards to this past pep week, I observed that a majority of the events pertain to only students who are athletic. Tug of war requires strength, while the three legged race requires coordination, and the potato sack race calls for jumping skills. These competitions only appeal to those who can take on the task of recreation games. What about the students who are not so comfortable in competing in these events?…

Even people who decided not to stay, ordered food together and shared conversations while waiting to take their food out. For example, two students walked in with their black backpacks on their shoulders and walked straight to the cashier to order food. They seemed like they were…

As a freshman who has only been in college for a week I wanted to know what a college student life was like. I was interested in finding out how students socialize in the dining hall. For this reason, I wanted to know if they were influence by their race, age, physically reasons or personal relationships. I order to do these observations I went to the dining hall during lunch time. First of all, the students I observed were not aware of me taking notes of their behaviors.…

Introduction: During my time at James A. Whitaker Elementary School in Buena Park Unified School District, I was able to observe Mrs. Solomon’s fourth grade class. Mrs. Solomon makes sure that her class is a very welcoming place. She does so by standing at the door in the morning and personally greeting each and every one of her students. Once each of the students have entered the class, Mrs. Solomon opens the class session by enthusiastically saying, “Welcome back!”…
