Question: How does race affect the rates of high school dropouts in the U.S.?
Methodology: Using multiple websites on the history, statistics, and reasons for student's drop out rates, I found many sources of information for why Blacks, Hispanics, and Whites drop-out of high school in the U.S. At the library, I also found a book called Dropping Out or Hanging In which helped develop my paper. While writing my findings, I recorded the sources used in my bibliography, then I made it into a visual.
Every 26 seconds a student in the United States drops out of high school. That is about two dropouts every minute and over 3,300 dropouts every day. Of those 3,300 drop-outs, the preponderance will be of Hispanic descent, African Americans …show more content…
65% of black children comes from low-income families; that is the highest rated race for low-income families (tied with Hispanics). With that being said, students feel they have no choice but to drop out. They will either not have a way to pay for college or they do not have any economically successful family members to model after. Furthermore, based on how black children are raised in less fortunate communities, they have little expectations. For those coming from poor black communities the schools will not have high standards for education ultimately giving the students little drive for eminence. Undoubtedly, those who come from low-income families typically lack the affluence to have college as an option and are not motivated to go to college. A majority of gang members are in fact black and will commit more crimes than those who are not. While being in gangs, education is not a priority for black youth and can result in juvenile imprisonment in which students have no choice but to not attend school. Included, if a majority of gang comrades is African-American, then students growing up with gang members in their families will be more likely to become involved in criminal behavior in their youth.
