High School Concert Band Performance

On November 5,2016 Olney Central College’s music department held its fall concert in the Dr. John D. Stull Performing Arts Center. This concert featured many vocalists and musicians between the concert band, the concert choir, and the jazz band. The performances feature many different composers. Overall, the concert band sounded really good. For this concert, the director chose songs that would reflect different stages of life. I liked this theme and the song choices just for how the rhythms, tempos, ad dynamics were for each song. I also like how some of the musicians described why the song relates to them before the band performed them. While there were several noticeable wrong notes played throughout the concert band performance, the overall quality was good. After …show more content…
All of their songs were played from memory which can be a tough thing to do. The first song was “Blues by Five.” This song was mainly compromised of solos. While there were several noticeable mistakes in a few of the solos, the overall performance of this song sounded good. I also enjoyed the third song, “Jo Jo Calypso.” This song had a cool island music vibe and I also liked how the other musicians stood to the side so everyone could see the guitarist play his solo. I also found it cool how they played this song without the director being up front conducting because this shows pure talent in the musicians since they had to rely on each other to keep the same tempo. The last song played by the jazz band that was also the last song of the concert was “Listen Here.” Like in the first song, there were a few noticeable mistakes during the solos but the musicians could have been tired because it was the end of the concert or nerves could have got to them. Overall though, this song came together well and was enjoyable to listen to. The musicians in the jazz band seem really talented and I am glad they stuck with staying in band in

From the very first song, I was surprised how much I enjoyed the performance despite me not knowing the genre very well. The first song, “Darlin’ Corey”, instantly caught my attention especially from the ‘bright’ banjo picking. The next song, ‘Freight Train’, was a completely different which had a more somber tone. In the beginning, it started very eerie-like until the banjo came in to brighten up the overall tone of the song. One of the notable moments of the whole concert was during the “In the Pines” in the first set, where the ensemble highlights the unlikely instrument, the French Horn.…

For the soloists, it was really powerful and seeing Dr. Sung Ae Lee move more than usual. The dynamics went loud to more loud, soft to loud, and slowly fades and pauses and chords strikes making a performance to be alive. There was a balance between the melody lines and the accompaniment giving a flowing sound and soothing tone. I enjoyed watching and hearing the cello for the first time with the piano were it accompaniments each other. There were no awful mistakes but the piece with the cello…

It was very soothing and relaxing to listen to. The music that the group produced was smooth throughout the concert. In the second song, the trumpet player used the technique of covering the hole of the trumpet where the sound comes out of with his hand and it made the trumpet sound similar to the trombone. The music was smooth and slow enough that one could move to it and follow along with it.…

The concert was presented by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Department of Music’s UNC Jazz Band on Saturday, October 10th, 2015. The concert venue was located at UNC Kenan Music Building’s Rehearsal Hall. It started from 8pm to 9.40 pm. Compared to all the other concerts that I have gone to, the UNC Jazz Band concert was a definite change in atmosphere as it was a large band consisted of students. The stage was set up really well and has a nice lighting.…

The band did a great job performing and the singer was amazing. I really enjoyed singing along and jamming to the music. The singer had a “jazz” voice, which really went well for my favorite piece of the night, Four Women. I also thought it was cool how everyone in the band had a chance to shine with their solos, but my favorite solo was definitely the singer.…

Now there were a couple songs in this but I really enjoyed the first one the best, so I focused on that song more but many of the songs are similar in there beat. This concert had four instruments all of which were string instruments which allowed for the song to flow better with each instrument. I love the sound of violin and viola together, while the cello and guitar are strumming at a lower beat than them. Overall this concert was amazing I could see and hear so much beauty through the entire performance.…

This was my favorite because it sounded like a more modern song and an easy song to dance to! If more jazz performances were like this one song, I would go all of the time. This song woke me up and was very upbeat. I liked that we got to see the two assistant conductors perform since they are going to be doing this on a daily basis. They did a very good job.…

During the final week of classes at Truman, I had the pleasure of hearing the school’s jazz bands in concert. During the concert, the Jazz Lab band and the Jazz Ensemble, both directed by Tim AuBuchon, played several jazz standards and modern favorites. The Jazz Lab band started out the night with five big band pieces. The instrumentation of the Jazz Lab band was standard for a big band; it included about four of each horn (saxophone, trumpet, and trombone), an upright bass, a piano, and a drumset.…

Zombie Intruders was one of my favorite songs from this concert. I think that it allowed me to focus more on dynamics which improved my sound quality. As a musician, I think this song was very enjoyable with all of the different sound effects incorporated. I liked how different this song was. Usually when common people who do not play any instruments think of orchestra, they think of boring classical music.…

Upon attending the International Chamber Music Festival Concert, a certain ecstatic vibe could be felt as the performers walked on stage with their musical instruments. The virtuoso’s performed in pieces that contained trios, duets, and quintets; showing the concentration they required when listening to each other. When working on Chamber Music, much of the melody jumps around from instrument to instrument, show casing various solos and much of the instruments having to coincide with each other to carefully listen for the melody. The first performance, was from Mosaics, by Eric Ewazen, only introducing the first movement: I. Barcarolle. The performers Dr. Susan Berdahl (flute), Dr. Xiaohu Zhou (bassoon), and Dr. James Moyer (marimba), all played outstandingly and show cased exactly how Chamber Music is meant to be played.…

Concert Report Two The concert performance given live that I have attended on Thursday April 20th, 2017 was an organ licentiate recital by Ian Guenette. It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…
