Hi Walter Epilogue

I was washing the laundry in a tub of hot water like any Thursday when I heard the door open and close I said “hi walter” and I didn't get a response from him so I figured that he was just tired. Later that evening I was making some of my homemade fried chicken for dinner and It would be ready in about thirty minutes, so I went to clean up what I could of my mess in the kitchen. When my husband got home, I called Walter to dinner and he did not come and I thought that he could not be asleep because this is too early for him to normally go to sleep so. So I called him a second time when Walter finally came out of his bedroom, he was walking stiff legged so I thought he was trying to be funny. When Walter tried to sit down, he winced and I …show more content…
This time walter's father said It in a deeper, more commanding voice “what's wrong boy” Walter said that his legs hurt so walter's dad told him to pull down his pants and all I could think about “no, not in the clean kitchen” but as soon as I saw Walters legs I was whisked away in a flood of other questions. Walter had that look of he was making up excuses and then out of nowhere he said “mother beat me with a stick” I was so traumatized I could not speak my brain shut down right there. After, that I took him to a hot bath and set him gently down in it. I still would not make eye contact because I was so shocked at his accusation. When I got out of the bathroom, I went to the kitchen to clean up the dishes and Walter's father was waiting for me with the look that showed all of the disgust and anger and when he saw me it was like a bomb went off in his head. He was so mad that he could barely get the words out “IF YOU EVER...HOW...WHY...IF YOU EVER TOUCH HIM AGAIN I’LL…”as he struggled to get the words out I was crying my mouth still would not cooperate with my brain so all I could do is

In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Hayden, a man looks back on his childhood to realize his father showed his love through his actions. The father woke up before the crack of dawn, even on Sunday, Hayden states, “then with cracked hands that ached/ from labor in the weekday made/ banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him,” (Lines 3-5) His body, at least his hands, showed the physical labor of his job taking a toll on him, but still he woke up early to make sure the house was warm for him and his children, yet no one ever showed his appreciation. After flinging my school bag onto my back in an angry manner, i left my empty casing of a family home slamming the door behind me. These simple things can indicate the proper character of our identity. Hayes’ makes something clear from the beginning that family is not restricted to your blood relatives, it is open to those that “[are] not your brother…
