Heroism In John Constantine's Hellblazer

My favorite anti-hero is John Constantine from the comic book Hellblazer. Constantine is a boorish, disillusioned British occult detective and a con artist station in London. While his well known for his perpetual cynicism, is an occult detective and con man stationed in London. He is known for his endless cynicism, sarcastic, ruthless cunning and constant chain smoking, however his is also avid humanist motivated by profound desire to do good deeds in his life. Even though Constantine is a humanist there is a constant struggle to overcome Heaven and Hell influences over humanity; despite his occasional ventures of heroism. Also, his motivation has been attributed to an adrenaline addiction that only the obscure and enigmatic can slake. Furthermore,

"Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

Macbeth, Brutus from Julius Ceasar, John Proctor from The Crucible, Hercules, Sirius Black from Harry Potter, and Spiderman all have a common fate; they are all tragic heroes. A tragic hero is “a great or virtuous character in a dramatic tragedy who is destined for downfall, suffering, or defeat” (Dictionary). Every hero has a downfall and a purpose; typically it is for the greater good for everyone else. In The Oedipus Plays of Sophocles, Antigone and Creon are characters who could be tragic heroes. Bounteous people do not envisage Antigone as a tragic hero; these people believe she is crazy, has no purpose, and does not help the kingdom.…

The question of what makes American literature American can be simply answered as any piece of writing that was written by someone who is American. While that is just one part, American literature has to reflect American culture as well as what America has been through. To answer this question, there must be a common idea that recurs in many books written by American authors. One of these common ideas that have shown up in many books is the character style of being an anti-hero. An anti-hero is a character that possesses “heroic” characteristics, but at the same time possesses characteristics that most heroes wouldn’t have.…

We often focus more on the protagonist of stories, but what about the antagonist? Reading all three of the short stories Where Have You Been by Joyce Carol Oates, A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’Connor, and A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner, they all expand the idea of the “bad guy.” The antagonists are the ones that truly develop the situation of stories, because without them there wouldn't be a conflict, or a story in general... At least not an interesting one to say the most.…

Achilles: Defining Homer’s Idea of Heroism Throughout the Iliad, characters such as Odysseus, Achilles, Agamemnon and Hector received a certain phrase after they’re announced: like a god (Book 7, Line 136). Even though these warriors were truly mortal – or demigod - they exhibited characteristics that declared them rightful owner of the title “hero.” However, these heroes were described as strong and ruthless warriors who killed and mutilated whatever they could in order to get what they wanted.…

Homer was a blind, oral poet who created both The Odyssey and The Iliad. Homer told these epics in many short episodes, then editors would write down the epics and arranged them into books. Homer wrote The Odyssey for entertainment, he does this by depicting events dealing with interaction between the gods and men. The Odyssey is set after the sack of Troy and tells the story of Odysseus’ nostos –journey home- to Ithaca. The epic poem shows us the nature of heroism in classical Greece, and touches on themes of what it means to be a man, the duties of a king/ruler and the ideals of a marriage.…

“Fate is the same for the man who holds back, the same if he fights hard / We are held in a single honor, the brave with the weaklings” 19.318-19. Achilleus realizes that despite his desires, mortality binds him. He recognizes the broken system of the Greek heroism and struggles with the concept of mortality.
