Based on Ústí municipal seals (the oldest seal dates back to 1380), it can be concluded that the symbol used on/in the coat of arms was a lion. The seal from 1380 depicts a shield with a lion which had a boat with oars instead of a helmet. This original symbol was described in detail in the charter of King Ladislaus the Posthumous. At that time, the Ústecký lion depicted on the shield was green which was the colour considered lower than red. The sources indicate that local people considered the original charter as “destroyed and lost due to the old age and ruthlessness of time” and asked King Vladislaus II to make a new copy of the charter. Arguably, they were led by desire to improve the coat of arms as in its clear form its detailed description and colourfully made illustration. This time, the shield was meant to be of the red colour (over the original green). The white lion with two entangled tails remained and was newly decorated with two metallic-coloured (golden) knots as well as the claws of the same colour. On the head of a lion to maintain the white helmet, chest white chain mail, but now lined with gold tips. The white helmet on the lion 's head remained as well as chain armour, now lined with golden tips. A golden crown was placed on the lion 's head from which grew two folded golden wings. The city of Ústí nad Labem has used the coat of arms in this form since
