On the island of Ortygia or better known as Delos, a special goddess was born. Her name is Artemis. She has a twin brother named Apollo. Her mother Leto and father Zeus were not married when they had the twins, and in fact, Zeus had a wife named Hera. Hera was always very jealous and when she heard that her husband had an affair with Leto and got her pregnant, she became furious. Hera used her powers to not let Leto give birth on an island or the mainland so she would suffer. One island disobeyed Hera’s orders and let Leto give birth there. Artemis was born before her twin brother and helped her mother deliver him right after she was born. Three Cyclopes named Brontes, Arges and Steropes made her bow and arrows. She is the goddess of the hunt and always shoots perfectly on target. Artemis chooses to live in the mountains and loved the wilderness. She respected all animals even though she was a hunter. The deer is one of many animals that are her sacred animals. On her chariot, she has a deer carved into the front section. Also in many Greek paintings, she is shown holding a deer. She is not live most goddess because she refused to marry, and never had any children.
Artemis and her brother were close but very competitive and always fought over things. For their third birthday, Zeus gave Apollo a bow and arrow. Artemis saw that her brother had one and wanted one too. When she finally got one, she became even better at it that him. They have always been called the twins of light because of their goodhearted nature. They grew up on the island in nature together and that is why they love being in the natural world.
In many stories and poems, Artemis is a simplistic natural goddess who is very beautiful. Many different men have tried to win the heart of her but it has not worked.
