In the chapter “Stockings”, one object that functions as a symbol is the pantyhose Henry Dobbins carries. “He liked putting his nose into the nylon and breathing in the scent of his girlfriend's body; he liked the memories the memories this inspired.” (page 111). This shows that Dobbins object has an emotional and intimate value to him. Also he believed carrying around the pantyhose worked as a good luck charm. “They kept him safe. They gave him access to a spiritual world, where things were soft and intimate,..” (page 112) This would be an instant reminder of his life back home and his loved one.

It was the first man he had ever killed. “There was a butterfly on his chin, his neck was open to the spinal cord and the blood there was thick and shiny and it was on the wound that had killed him.” (page 118) Tim O’Brien tells the reader of how he sees a butterfly on the dead body. O’Brien is devastated and in shock after the death, he does not move or say a single word to anybody. In my opinion, the butterfly served as his innocence in the war that is now gone, “The butterfly was gone. The bleeding had stopped except for the neck wounds.” (page 123).

O’Brien was in shock and confusion all as it happened, he saw the man and with no instinct, he threw the grenade. “I had already thrown the grenade before telling myself to throw it.” (page 127).
