Major General Sir Henry Clinton shifted his focus to the south, because of loyalist support. On December 29th 1778 Major General Archibald Campbell to Savannah with a company of 3100 this included the 71st Highland Regiment, New York loyalists and Hessian mercenaries. The support of these groups lead a well-constructed plan to take power over Savannah, GA. The surprise attack on American forces caused major general Robert Howe to only have a small number of men on hand. He tried to defend the great city of savannah with only 700 men but to no avail. The city was evacuated and the army retreated from combat as ordered by General Howe. This battle left 453 of the American troops captured by British forces, 83 were killed and 11 injured. Following this battle General Howe retreated to his home state of South Carolina. This grueling battle that took so much was only the start of the battle for Savannah.
