I worked with my church, church of redeem to give out clothes to the homeless. We gave out clothes down city hill. We gave out shirt, shoes whatever they needed to get through the winter. We also had hot chocolate and snacks to give to them. It was a nice experience. They was very happy and thankful that people came out and care about them. I felt happy and alive inside. Doing this made me start thinking about starting my own organization to help the homeless. I feel as though I can help them a lot. It’s a lot of planning to do but I will achieve my goal. I was suppose when other people cam down with stuff for homeless. I was happy we wasn’t the only ones helping them out. I had conversation with a couple of people. I wanted to hear

I helped sorting and packaging so many different donated items from individuals and companies. When we walked in the Food bank we had to file out volunteer paper then they took us inside the warehouse to start working on sorting and packaging all kinds of food. First we start sorting and checking the food, so we had to check the items date, check for any damages, and make sure that the items have the…

I use to work with a girl who was homeless and she was living out of her friends closet just to have somewhere to sleep at night. She didn’t know how long she would get to stay there so I bought her a sleeping bag, a blanket, and a pillow incase she had to sleep outside again or just in case she didn’t have anything to sleep with at night. She was so happy to receive the gifts from me and seeing her appreciation made me realize, what seems like a little gift to you is a huge need for someone…

Through our project, we raised awareness of the need in our community and the resources that are there to help, such as the Good Shepherd Center. By our research and service to the community, I believe that we made an impact on some of the women that were recipients of the purses and the effort behind them. I also know that the shelter is appreciative of the service we performed. This project was a blessing to me because it showed me what an impact we can make in our community with something as small as a purse. It’s a reflection of taking something that is simple and making a difference with it.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

I really like your “A Tour of homelessness” intervention. Homelessness is an increasing public health issue. It is reported that on a single night in January 2015, 564,708 people were experiencing homelessness.1 Due to the poor living conditions and limited access to healthcare, homeless people are more susceptible to various communicable diseases and infections. Thus, increasing the awareness of the different communities towards the dire need of addressing the homelessness problem is important. Taking the community residents through life of a homeless person is a good start.…

I would spend my one million dollars in three very distinct and controversial ways. I would portion the money out to be donated to three different causes. My number one cause is factory jobs going to other countries, which is going to receive six hundred thousand. Second, homelessness would be nonexistent due to people having more jobs and my donation of three hundred thousand. Lastly, the income gap between the rich and poor would be substantially lower and the middle class population would increase dramatically due to more job opportunities in the United States of America and the final donation of my million dollars of one thousand dollars.…

“The elderly population has historically been underrepresented among the homeless population. The limited national homelessness data that have been collected over the past two decades are consistent in revealing that homelessness is much more prevalent among younger adults than among older adults and the elderly. A 1996 national study by the Urban Institute found that, while those over age 55 represented 28 percent of the general adult population, they made up only 8 percent of the homeless population” (National Alliance, 2010). Some of the policies that have been created are generally for the entire homeless population. As a mention before it is a big issue because the aging population is growing and the number of senior without a home will…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

To my surprise, I found myself somewhere I never visualized myself being on a Friday night, actually, a place I never expected I would spend any night to be exact, surrounded by fifty or sixty men; of all different races, ages, and religions. I had overwhelming feelings of reconsideration and anxiety flowing through my body. I was wondering if these men would look at me different because of how I dressed or spoke. Nevertheless, I tried to convince myself everybody here was equal, and that I was not superior to the men here were.…

Imagine yourself walking down the street coming from home and going to work. On the way to work you see a homeless person holding up a sign that says, “Please donate”, with a bucket on the front. What would people do at this situation? Many have ignored the homeless and few have helped. There are reasons why we ignore them instead of helping, but helping someone in our world is a “good deed”.…

As I drive or walk on the streets of Chicago, I see lots of homeless people around; which are often ignored by people like us. Some beg on traffic signals while others are by grocery stores. I see their torn clothes and scratchy hands. Sometimes I see children begging for some money to get food, while some go to schools wearing the same clothes for many days. It is very appalling to see that many homeless people and children live without an unknown tomorrow.…
