In 1775, the Continental Army was formed by the Continental Congress to raise an army to fight against the British. Since that day, brave men and women have fought and died for this country.
Some of those brave men and women that have fought for our country didn’t die. Some of them lived, and some of those men and women are living on the streets. There’s now a big problem in our country. They risked their lives to defend our nation against its enemies and now they have nothing to show for it. These veterans lack a home, medical care and jobs and they lack the means to get back on their feet because they are destitute. There are almost 50,000 homeless veterans living in the US today (NAEH). It is disrespectful to let those that defended our freedoms sleep under bridges and rummage through garbage cans for food. It is time to help these people become functioning members of society again through finding employment, education, permanent residences and health care.

With an education, employment and proper medical treatment, the veterans would be ready to step back into the real world and get off the streets. There is no other way to repay them for their service to their country. The only other option is to wait for them and let them be incarcerated, which is not a viable option given the current need for prison reform in this nation. If we don’t get them off the streets and back into society, most of them will probably end up in prison or die on the streets.
