It's the idea that a man has to be the sole dominant person in the relationship and he should be hypersexual and heterosexual. This idea was very popular in the early 1900's because back then women were looked at as though they were property of the man and nothing else. The reason why women change their last name to the husband's is because of this idea that the male is the superior in the relationship. In the modern world, women are now able to stand up for themselves and combat this stereotype that women are nothing but the property of the male that they are either married to or partnered with. As society started to accept a man that liked the "feminine" type things, like art, music, dancing etc. men started to get badgered about being "sissy" or "wimpy" because that goes against what the masculinity demands.
Today culture is so much more accepting than it was 50-100 years ago. Men and women today in most cases are looked at equally. Obviously there are still cases where the woman is treated wrongfully for who she is and what she benefits to the society. There are still many people out there that believe that the woman is the inferior person of the relationship. As society starts to accept people for who they are instead of the sex of that particular person, we won't ever get passed the stereotype that many people have.
