The Deathly Dog Days of Summer With summer right around the corner, many people will be out and about doing all the things that could not be done during the dreary months of winter. Although summer is filled with activities, the heat of the day could put you at risk. Overheating can lead to heat exhaustion or even a heat stroke. Knowing the signs could save your life or others. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke may be caused by a number of reasons, while the repercussions can be detrimental to health, and these conditions affect both humans and animals. During the heat of summer, outdoor activities can cause the body's temperature to rise, which can result in heat exhaustion or a heatstroke. Both heat exhaustion and heat stroke are heat related illnesses, however, heat strokes are significantly more dangerous. (Glazer) Regardless, if you are spending a day at the beach, training for an athletic event, or working, heat can become deadly if the warning signs are ignored. Anyone can become victim of the heat, regardless of age or condition of health. Heat-related injuries are the leading cause of deaths in sports activities. (Greene) However, there are many causes for heat-related fatalities. Unfortunately, many cases involve children. According to kidsandcars.org, an organization that tracks the number of child heatstroke deaths, an average of 38 children per year die from heatstroke after being left in hot vehicles.
