Heartburn is a burning pain that can happen in the throat or chest. It may also cause a bad taste in the mouth. Heartburn may feel worse in certain positions, such as lying down or bending over. This condition is caused by stomach acid that has gotten into the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach (esophagus).
HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Diet
• Follow a diet as recommended by your health care provider. This may involve avoiding foods and drinks such as:
○ Caffeine.
○ Alcoholic drinks.
○ Chocolate.
○ Peppermint or mint flavorings.
○ Garlic and onions.
○ Spicy foods.
○ Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, or limes.

○ Carbonated drinks or sodas.
• Eat small, frequent meals instead of large meals.
• Avoid eating late meals.
• Avoid lying down right after eating.

• Take over-the-counter and prescription medicines only as told by your health care provider. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs unless told to do so by your health care provider.
• Do not use any tobacco products, including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and e-cigarettes. If you need help quitting, ask your health care provider.
• Raise the head of your bed as told by your health care provider.
• Wear loose-fitting clothing. Do not wear anything tight around your waist that causes pressure on your stomach.
• Try to reduce your stress, such as with yoga or meditation. If you need help, ask your health care provider.
• Watch your heartburn for any changes.
SEEK MEDICAL CARE IF:
• You have difficulty swallowing or it hurts to swallow.
• You have new symptoms.
• Your symptoms do not improve with treatment.
• You have frequent heartburn for more than a couple of weeks.
• You have unexplained weight loss.
• You have a persistent cough or
