Heartbeat of Toledo is a pro-life pregnancy support center in the city of Toledo, OH which main purpose is to help women with unplanned pregnancies, as well as helping the parents and the babies with basic needs. Heartbeat services include: free pregnancy tests with ultrasound confirmation, options counseling, Heart to Heart Prenatal and Parent learning Center, six week relationship smart program for women, Hope and Healing Abortion Support Group, Just for Dads Group, and Emergency Assistance. Heartbeat of Toledo was founded in May 17th, 1971 by an obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. John Hillabrand and a holocaust survivor. It was a great experience for me for it helped me understand what giving back means and how great of an impact it can make in someone’s life. I believe that it is a great teaching tool and I am glad I chose to do my service learning at Heartbeat of Toledo because it has opened my eyes to many things. It has given me the desire to serve my community even more. The significance of service learning in my professional development as a nurse is to enhance my academic learning through hands-on application. This basically defines my purpose at Heartbeat. By providing my services at Heartbeat, I was able to give back to my community by helping those in need. This learning experience was very important to me because it challenged me to do more for my community and beyond. As a nurse, I will be providing services to my patients. This experience has showed me how to properly service my patient based on their needs and wants. Lastly, excellence is another Mercy core value that is defines as “Pursuing distinction in our professional and personal lives through quality academics and intellectual inquiry.” This service learning has enabled me to appreciate the role of excellence in my profession as a nurse.
