The health information services industry (HIS), is constantly changing and evolving with new technology. In more recent years, HIS has started to switch over to an electronic information system which has led to an increase in the number of tasks most employees must complete in the average day. Through goal setting and job enrichment practices, it is possible for management to change with the times as well as keep employees feeling fulfilled. The principles of goal setting are applied in the HIS field very often. Leaders in health information services determine their goals based on four main levels: re-engineering, restructuring, work redesign, and job redesign. These different levels are chosen and used based on management’s analysis of the current work situation. Watching for changes in the work environment is a crucial part of a manager’s job; in the case of HIS, email began to take more of an employee’s time during the day, although it was not in the job description. The addition of small tasks like these can add up and cause an employee stress, so this must be taken into account by management. Once the situation has been analyzed, the management can decide which course of action to take and form their goal around that. Today, many employees must spend larger portions of their day learning and using an electronic system, which is much different from the previous industry. The introduction of this extra daily task led to a higher rate of communication via email, which is much faster and therefore made communication more efficient. Unfortunately, this efficiency came at the cost of employee satisfaction. Email became a kind of unwritten daily task for many in HIS, which caused stress as discussed above.
