I just wanted to give an update about where life is for me. I believe an email like this has been long overdue. As you know, during the academic year I am a Health Informatics grad student. It is still difficult to succinctly describe the field, but the way that I like to explain it as is making the healthcare system better through information. Much of what happens in Health Informatics lines up exactly with what we do in Science Education and Systems Biology, and I often find myself in an advantaged position because of my experiences in the lab. Most of the relevant experiences stem from Steve’s consistent heckling of me; but occasionally things like qualitative/quantitative analysis, data collection, or effective pedagogy will come up. Also, learning from Trisha’s incredibly meticulous organization techniques/standards has saved me too many times to count. …show more content…
If you haven’t heard of them, they are one of the largest Integrated Managed Care Organizations in the United States. In our field, KP is a desirable place to work because they have the infrastructure for robust interoperability (more data) and a strong emphasis on improving the health of patient populations (better health outcomes). Right now, my role in KP is as a data analyst. The three facets of what I do are:
1) Create interactive dashboards/visualizations to stratify patients on re-admittance risk scores
2) Conduct exploratory analysis on claims data and medical encounter data to identify areas for that can save money for both the patients and health system
3) Create scripts that automate certain reports that analysts previously used to spend hours creating.
I am having so much fun with this work, and I could not have asked for a better way to begin my career path towards becoming a Data
