The true effects of health informatics on lowering health care costs are still in the process of evaluation. With the focus on quality health care as part of the national health reform, many organizations have been utilizing the health information technology (HIT)to improve the care process and coordination, meet the compliance requirements, and ultimately, lower the health care costs. In Kudyba (2016), it was reported that health care wasteful spending come from utilizing the defensive medicine, applying excessive administrative costs, and treating chronic, preventable health conditions. For example, in the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion [ODPHP] (2014), the use of HIT has demonstrated its efficiency in portraying the state by state health compared to the national goals. Providers can focus on the main chronic illness and risk factors that contribute to the high cost of health care. Nowadays, obesity plays the major contributor to rising medical costs complicating the other existing illnesses such as diabetes, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. As a result, clients are encouraged to take responsibility for their health, with the use of HIT, through accessing their health records, creating goals, providing education, and keeping track of their progress.
Many more benefits of HIT are being realized in the health care delivery systems. One major influence of HIT is holding providers’ accountable to quality health care and lowering health care costs. In fact, many national health initiatives are introduced based on the analytic outcomes aided by HIT. As care providers, nurses should be proactive in developing informatics skills to use them to reduce the health care costs by promoting appropriate treatment, improving the care process, and preventing complications that lead to chronic health
