As a result of inadequacies in mental health care system, America’s mentally ill population suffers a lot. The effect of these inadequacies is happening due to lack of mental health resources, budget, etc. Lack of proper care has left many individuals with minimal support. There are many kinds of psychological disorders from which a person can suffer by landing in jail such as trauma-related disorders, depression, bipolar disorder and so on. As compared to men, women suffer more from mental disorders. The United States has one of the highest imprisonment rates in the world.

The country has nearly 25% of the world prisoner and has 73% of women in state prison, 61% of women in federal prison and 75% of women in local jails. As inmates spend more time behind bars 1 in every 35 adults in the US was in probation or in parole in 2012. An alarming growth in the number of mentally ill people behind bars has increased over the years. Individuals behind bars can have some major mood disorders, psychotic disorders and as many as seven types of mental illnesses.
