Down deep in the Mines of Moria, the wizard Gandalf gave a simple yet powerful saying,”All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.” In other words, priorities will define what we achieve in out lives. This is a major part of what Suzanne Collins was trying to emphasize in her book, The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games novel takes place in a future civilization called Panem. The corrupt government of this society forces each of its state like districts to give a male and female tribute to the Capitol, where they would fight to the death. It is not uncommon to see people who lack any and all drive to accomplish their goals in life. Cato Institute describes one example of this. They state, “he (Pres. Obama) called for raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour over the next 3 years…. such proposals are politically popular” (Minimum Wage Debate) This shows that many people have monetary goals, yet they are unwilling to pay the price it takes to receive higher paying jobs. So, instead they will call for a rise minimum wage. On occasion though, we see these individuals, and others rise to become driven academically, religiously and physically, to accomplish tremendous feats. One person of such drive is Steve Jobs, who, as we all know founded Apple. Although he started out as its company manager, Jobs experienced increased friction with his partners, enough that he was, “removed from his managerial duties, Jobs resigned and left Apple” (Steve Jobs Biography). He did not take this as a defeat though; he created two new innovative enterprises: NeXT and Pixar. Both were bought by successful established companies (Apple and Disney), which put him back into high-powered management positions.
