Many of them had torn shoes and some of them did not have shoes at all! The soldiers needed the shoes because there was snow on the ground. Some soldiers got frostbite on their feet or on other parts of their bodies. General Washington tried to convince the Congressional Committee to give the soldiers the equipment that they needed. This would be one of the lesser concerns to me if I was a soldier at Valley forge. I would stay at Valley Forge if this was the only problem.
There were soldiers who complained a lot about the terrible conditions in Valley Forge. One doctor from Valley Forge even wrote diary entries about what went on there.(Document C) He wrote about how there was smoke every where and this made it hard to breath and he also talked about how everything was disgusting there. He said he was scared he might freeze or starve to death and he said that he was vomiting half the time. After hearing all of the terrible things that happened at Valley Forge I definitely would not have stayed
