Hate speech in “Animal farm” and “Priscilla the Cambodian” Hate speech is used as one of the apparatuses employed both in “Animal farm” by George Orwell and “Pricilla the Cambodian” by Rattawut Lapcharoensap. Although it occurs in different circumstances and contexts, the two stories share some ideas in common which significantly reflect the act of their characters as well as the societies, which will be explained further.

The reason behind it is on the grounds of racial prejudice against Cambodian of Thai people, in addition, stereotype, for example when the mother says “The refugees were a bad sign” (97). This shows that she has a preconception that the Cambodian are wickedness, an outsider, which illustrate human nature that difference can intimidate us and result in the judgement without concrete reasons, significantly influencing us to treat people differently and inhumanely. Like, Animal Farm, the target of the hate speech is blamed on when anything went wrong in the development, for example, “Father blamed the rats on the refugees. He said they brought vermin with them.”(109) Despite the fact that they are the one who have no hygiene themselves, they put the blame on the Cambodians without considering their own mistake. This is evidently mentioned by the narrator that “they left their empty bottles on the straw mat in our yard, and for some reason I thought about how my mother and I would have to pick up the mess in the morning.”(110). Considering all these, it seems like the fear of things that are different from them, either the idea or system Napoleon wants to prevent from the farm, or a fear of the outsiders, the Cambodians, can be the cause of the hate speech which lead to following unfavorable
