Moscone was trying to get a more diverse board of supervisors. So in 1977 the San Francisco Board of Supervisors had a filipino man, an african american woman, and an openly gay man named Harvey Milk. Harvey fought against a law called proposition six, wich was a law proposed by a pollution named John Briggs. The law would allow schools to fire their teachers because of sexual orientation. Harvey let the people of San Francisco know how wrong this law was and he voted against it as a Supervisor. But there was another person on the Board of Supervisors named Dan White. He thought that San Francisco was losing it’s family values by starting to accept homosexualality. Harvey and Dan White would often argue in the office. He eventually resigned, saying that his salary of $9,600 wasn’t enough to feed his family. Dan White turned into a heavy drinker. After he fired the shots he immediately ran to the police station and turned himself in. Dan white’s court case is known by many people as “The Twinkie Defence” His lawyer said that after Dan White resigned he took to a diet of junk food and became ill, and that's why he broke into a government building and killed two people. Insane right? But surprisingly the jury bought it, and Dan White was charged for voluntary manslaughter, and was given only 6 years in jail. After this incident there were multiple riots all over San Francisco. 224 people were injured, including 59 policemen. Harvey Milk assassination came at a very tough and important time in history.
