The Giver by accomplished author Lois Lowry is a dystopian novel featuring a young man named Jonas. In this dystopian society every year 12s go to the ceremony where they receive jobs. This society had always seemed normal to Jonas until that day. He had been chosen to be the receiver, one who receives memories from the past in order to make decisions to better the society. Once his job was selected for him, he went to his job and received some memories from the giver, the old receiver who has to pass down the memories. This is when everything changed. Harrison had been 14 when he was taken away. The year is now 2081 and he has been locked up for vandalism and removing his handicaps, which assured that everyone was equal. These “wonderful” handicaps allowed everyone to have perfectly average intelligence, be just as strong as everyone else, and to have the same, average looks. Harrison, however, did not agree with his society, after being locked up, escaped and broadcasted himself removing his handicaps on live television. The broadcast was interrupted by him and he was killed shortly after, on live television. This story is about freedom, equality, and family.
