Henry David Thoreau, a famous poet, philosopher, and journalist, became well known for his beliefs in Transcendentalism and Civil Disobedience. Transcendentalism was a philosophy that became popular in the late 18th and 19th century. They believed that the physical world is important, and that people should live their lives based on the truths of their thought and reason. The philosopher wrote an inspiring book called Civil Disobedience. In an excerpt of Civil Disobedience, Thoreau states that we the people need to work together, and cannot wait for the majority to start taking these actions, meaning we can not wait for the individuals who aren 't sure about what route to take to change their minds. Thoreau 's idea of action upon Civil Disobedience is that if we all break the law, then we all go to prison, but there is only so much room in a prison that we won 't all fit inside, hence we clog up jails. The Chicano Walkouts have bettered our conditions, now anyone os able to use the restroom during lunch time, and students are allowed to in their home language without getting punished. However, there are some things that still need change. Some of these include better lunch meal options, lower class sizes, more college counselors, and more electives. Students from low-income neighborhoods are receiving less opportunities than other students in higher income places. It is hard to live in a society where mostly whites seem to have more opportunities than people of color. Our race should not get in between our education and our opportunities, students deserve to be treated equally. This type of mindset must change and the only way to do that is by having our voices be heard in a form of protest. Methods of Civil Disobedience will be effective in this matter because students of a much younger age are demanding for rights, we must be cautious of what method we chose, we do not want any lives lost during this process. Not only will using Civil Disobedience be effective but also it will be a way to show that people of color are not as the media portrays us to be, we are not violent and savage, but that we are a generation that is trying to change the negative mindsets that society
