In the story, "Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad" it says, " She discovered that freedom meant more than the right to keep the money that one earned. It was the right to vote and to sit on juries"(138). Through all the actions of Harriet Tubman, Thomas Garrett, and Ellen Craft they all portray and relate to freedom and sacrifice which is illustrated by the quote, "We got to go free or die. And freedom's not bought with dust." Harriet Tubman shows a lot of sacrifice and freedom through acts of leadership of the slaves while they are on the journey to freedom. Thomas Garrett was a very kind man who lived in Wilmington, Delaware and had contributed many things for the slaves on their journey. One example that illustrates the theme of freedom and sacrifice is how he had given the slaves shoes to wear. He shows freedom and sacrifice because if he had been caught helping the slaves he would have faced many repercussions due to this act therefore sacrificing his life. He shows freedom because of how he helped the slaves out of his will although he knew he could get in trouble. Also, he is a very big and strong man but he never harmed people. He shows freedom and sacrifice because of he always helps people instead of creating harm and danger and no harm can object to him or others. An example of this can be seen toward the middle of the story when Harriet Tubman and the slaves reach the checkpoint, of Thomas Garret's house. In the story it says, " There was a hidden room in the store. A whole wall swung open, and behind it was a room where he could hide fugitives"(444). This shows that Thomas Garrett had hid the slaves in his house and gave them shelter for a day.
