At the opening of the novel, protagonist Haroun Khalifa is living with his father, Rashid, a renowned storyteller, and his mother Soraya. Soraya becomes enticed with neighbor Mr. Sengupta, and they choose to run away together. Thenceforth Rashid is hired to tell stories on behalf of local politicians, but fails to complete this task, instead only managing to say, “Ark”. The father and son then travel to the Valley of K by a messenger, Mr. Butt. They are traveling to the Valley of K to speak for another politician, Snooty Buttoo. Trying to sleep aboard Buttoo’s boat, Haroun stumbles upon Iff the Water Genie who is sent to shut off Rashid’s storytelling abilities, and demands to speak with Iff’s boss, the Walrus. Then they are carried to the Sea of Stories by Butt the Hoopoe, Once at the Sea of Stories, Haroun learns that the Sea of Stories is being …show more content…
They are then captured by Khattum-Shud’s shadow, who plans to seal the Story Source at the bottom of the Sea of Stories. Before the Plug is finished, Mali destroys the machines that are used to poison the Sea. Haroun uses Wish Water to upset the rotation of Kahani, the planet that contains the kingdoms of Gup and Chup. Chup is no longer eternally dark, causing all of the shadows to melt away. The Guppee army begins to battle the Chupwala army, destroyed by their distrust caused by their enforced vows of silence. They are able to rescue Princess Batcheat. Consequently, Khattum-Shud is crushed by a statue he commissioned himself. As a reward for his heroism, the Walrus promises Haroun a happy ending for his story, when he instead wishes for a happy ending for his entire town. On return to the human world, Rashid tells the tale of “Haroun and the Sea of Stories”.
