The first threatening factor to any society is disease; which we know has the ability to wipe out mass numbers of people in relatively short amount of times. A well-known example was the bubonic plague in the 14th century. This disease was extremely infectious and spread over a vast area as described by the Center of Disease Control when they state "[The Plague] spread along the great trade routes to Constantinople and then to Europe, where it claimed an estimated 60% of the European population" (CDC Plague History 4). If a disease like the black death wiped out most of a continents population, it definitely has the ability to destroy a civilization. The end of this particular disease came by fortune when developments in its genetic structure dampened its lethality. The end is described by Collin McEvedy in his journal The Bubonic Plague when he writes “The plague kept reappearing, but the epidemics did not spread as widely: apparently a new and milder strain of Yersinia pestis evolved that made at least some people immune to the virulent strain.” (McEvedy 1). Despite the end of the epidemic, one cannot force a disease to mutate into a weaker form; if another …show more content…
Global warming is a legitimate and severe threat. However, since people have recognized these threats, countries and companies are doing a great deal to fight against them. While conversion to renewable and safe resources is slow, it is indeed taking place on a large scale. Researchers have found and are developing ways to reduce harmful emissions. The organization Greenpeace in the United States claim “With technology already available, renewable energy sources like wind, solar and geothermal can provide 96 percent of our electricity and 98 percent of heating demand—the vast majority of U.S. energy use.” (Fighting Global Warming 6). The ability to stop global deterioration is out there and can be stopped; it will not cause the decline and fall of every successful civilization. In fact, a very successful civilization and top power in the world- the United States of America- is fighting climate change as a whole with its Consolidate Appropriations Act that provided tax breaks for solar users (Energy.gov Renewable Energy Tax Credit). All civilizations face a number of adversities; but the world today is capable of stopping or reducing the impact of disease, natural disaster, and global
