An important component is the education and training of both front-line nurses and health care employers. Training workshops are geared toward front-line nursing personnel to review fundamental topics of safe patient handling, the impact of back injuries as far as the shortage of nursing goes, the myth that goes along with "proper" body mechanics, assessment of ergonomic hazards in the health care work setting, and the use of engineering controls.
They are really trying to make an effort to promote the use of assistive equipment. One of the main problems with trying to get healthcare personnel to use assistive equipment is the dwindling budgets and financial resources. These decision-makers must be made aware of the cost-savings that can be realized as a function of preventing back injuries, along with other musculoskeletal injuries. The traditional body mechanics that are taught in nursing schools don’t translate well when it comes to manual patient handling. Body mechanic methods predominantly concentrate on the lower back for lifting. They don’t account for other susceptible body parts that involved in other types of patient handling tasks. Demonstrating proper body mechanics in the learning stage of nursing school helps nursing students early on with practicing body mechanics.
