Hamlet And Decision Making In William Shakespeare's Hamlet

Improved Essays
The major topic William Shakespeare exhibits throughout the book Hamlet is making decisions. The topic is revisited in various scenes spread throughout the play, predominantly involving the main character, Hamlet. In each of these scenes, the readers and audience are able to determine what Shakespeare is saying about decision making.

The play Hamlet is named after the main character himself. Originally attending school in Germany, Hamlet then travels back home to Denmark after receiving the news of his father 's death, King Hamlet. Upon his arrival Hamlet is devastated and disgusted to find out that his father 's brother, Claudius, is marrying his mother, Gertrude. About 2 months after the King’s death, a ghost appears and is first seen by

Claudius however, traumatized and paranoid from the play, slips outside to chat with Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to come up with a solution for Hamlet’s madness. He results in sending the two men to escort Hamlet to England. Afterwards, Polonius enters to inform him that he will listen in on Hamlet’s conversation with his mother, Gertrude. Once Polonius exits and Claudius gets alone, he begins to confess to God about his murder and the sin he has committed of killing his own brother. Hamlet enters the room with a decision made to kill Claudius, but suddenly decides against it because he realizes that if he kills Claudius when he is praying, his soul will be sent to heaven, therefore he decides that he wants to kill Claudius when he is in the act of doing something sinful. “And am I then revenged to take him in the purging of his soul, when he is fit and seasoned for his passage? No, up sword, and know thou a more horrid hent. When he is drunk asleep, or in his rage,” (3:3:89-94). In my opinion, Shakespeare is saying that when it comes to decision making, it is much more complex than it looks like. It is not meant to be simple or done overnight. Decision making comes with a very long thought process. When you think you have come to a …show more content…
In conclusion, I infer that Shakespeare’s intention was to portray that making a decision is never easy. Coming to a decision you are satisfied with is not something that’s meant to be done overnight, it could take days, or even months. With this in mind, acting on your first instinct can be fairly dangerous, it’s essential to weigh your pros and cons and never act on impulse. It’s a long and thorough thought process, but having some inspiration and a motivational drive can help speed up the process much more quick. I agree with Shakespeare to a large extent. Making decisions is not something that’s meant to be easy in the real world, there are consequences you must take into consideration and a lot of thinking to meet a certain end before finally acting on a

Claudius is off his guard and Hamlet has the upper hand and will be “revenged” (3.3.75) for his father’s death if he kills Claudius. Although this seems like the perfect opportunity, Hamlet chooses to not to go through with the deed as he believes that if Claudius dies while praying his soul will go to “heaven” (3.3.78). To Hamlet this would be like hiring Claudius to kill his father and then pay him “salary, not revenge” (3.3.79) by sending him to heaven. Hamlet comes to the conclusion that he would rather kill his uncle while “he is drunk asleep; or in his rage; or in th’ incestuous pleasure of his bed” (3.3.89-90) to ensure his soul goes to hell and fulfills his…

This quote from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet is a starting point to show a main characters tragic flaws. For Hamlet, the main character in the play, he often procrastinates in completing tasks. Thesis Statement Most of our actions are governed by non-conscious parts of the brain, giving logical reasoning a very limited and ineffective authority over how we decide and what we do. The sub-conscious, or the unconscious always has a stronger control over the self, and trying to resist its authority would only lead to frustration and disillusionment. In Shakespeare’s iconic character Hamlet, this dilemma between the reasoning of the conscious and the overriding intuitive powers of the unconscious can be observed as Hamlet’s trying to make sense of every step he takes only makes him less decisive and brings him unhappiness.
