SUMMARY:
It was midnight when Barnardo relieved another guardsman, Francisco, from his duties. Barnardo heard a cry but it turned out to be Marcellus. Marcellus brought Horatio, a scholar and Hamlet’s friend, with him to observe the appearance of the ghost. All of a sudden, the ghost appeared but it did not speak with Horatio. Marcellus insisted to strike it with his partisan however, the ghost disappeared immediately. The three men agreed to tell the situation to young Hamlet. QUOTE:
(1.1.152) “Shall I strike it with my partisan?” – Marcellus The quote makes me laugh because we all know that the ghost is just a spirit. A spirit does not have any physical form. Claudius convinced Laertes that Hamlet killed his father and he was their enemy. The letter arrived and Claudius found out that Hamlet was still alive. He was confused but he devised a plan. Claudius told Laertes that Hamlet envied Laertes’s skill with sword. He ought to use this skill and lure Hamlet into a duel with Laertes. Claudius will poison Hamlet’s sword and drink. He believed that they need to create another trick to truly kill Hamlet. Gertrude rushed in with the news of Ophelia’s death. She said that Ophelia drowned in the river while she was gathering flowers. Laertes was devastated by the news.
