Hamilton Long's Influences In My Career

Leadership is the ability to guide and mentor people toward a common goal or idea. MKCS Claude Rine and LT Hamilton Long have been the influences in my career. SC Rine was the MK1 at my first unit, the HARRIET LANE. While there I struck MK under his tutelage. Claude was a stern, yet fair mentor. When discussing practical factors, he would teach the fundamentals of each, then direct me to the tech pubs to study. Only when I could return and describe each task with confidence would he sign off on the prac. My motivation was reinforced by Claude allowing me to break-in and qualify Oiler watch; eventually allowing me to stand the watch. Claude always told me to ‘leave it better than when I got there’ and I have tried to live that at each unit. My other influence in my career is CWO Hamilton Long. His influence was not positive, but I have since used it that way. From the day I reported, Ham was the leader that nothing was good …show more content…
Describes a compelling image of what our future could be: Being at the deck plate level for challenging process to balance. My focus was always on allowing the unit to perform its core missions. I must expand my horizons to include where the CG is headed to engage junior members to visualize this as well. 2. Ask for feedback on my actions affect people’s performance: Asking how my actions affect people’s performance will be an important part of my future interactions. This behavior was, by far, the lowest score in the ‘Model the Way’ practice. Though I scored well in the remaining areas, I must remember to ask those members what needs to be improved based on my interactions with them. 3. Throughout history the National Honor Society has become synonymous with the best of the best. A school club that has built a legacy on students who exemplify the ideals of leadership, service, character, and citizenship. To even be considered for a group of this nature would be an honor within itself. Leadership is simply defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization however, I believe leadership to be much more than simply being in charge. True leadership is simply more than being bossy and I have learned this through my experiences within boy scouts.…

The term “leadership”, as described throughout Unit 1 of our reading, is portrayed by one’s ability to influence and or develop those around him or her in a positive direction (Manning & Curtis, 2012). Personally, I find that being a leader, in today’s society, is only as difficult as maintaining that influence through personal growth and experience. Additionally, a leader must possess the ability to motivate and direct others through collaborative communication in the attempt to achieve organizational objectives. Someone I find to be a great leader would be General George Patton of the United States Army.…

The Leadership Philosophy of Senior Chief Marine Science Technician Keith Naker To lead is to harness the motivations, hopes, and aspirations of others; to apply that energy to achieving a shared vision. CWO Harder exemplified this leadership model early in my career. He frequently adjusted to our crew, advocated for us to the command, and even in the most difficult moments, maintained his composure. Leadership must not fail to take into account the individualism that makes up the organization.…

Leadership can be defined as the ability to guide or direct the actions of others, so as to achieve a common goal. The lesser known term, followership is the exact opposite of leadership. Without leadership, followership would not exist. They coincide with one another and cannot be separated, for without followers, leaders would not be. In Civil Air Patrol, one is expected to be both a leader and a follower; especially as a cadet, one must report to their commanding officer while being simultaneously responsible for their own cadets.…

Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Working for the military, I have communicated both orally and in writing to subordinates and leadership. Since 2005, I have written the military’s version of assessments and appraisals. It is imperative that when leading you communicate objectives clearly and concisely, both in writing and orally. I will find new ways to apply the different tools learned at the Senior Enlisted Leadership Course to attempt to resolve our conflicts rather than to avoid them. I owe that to my peers and to myself. Learning to be empathetic to the evolving needs of our civilian employees is something that I can also continue to improve upon. I must move past the desire to avoid engaging with them all together due to past encounters, as that will prove to be counterproductive to my personal development and the mission of the command. I cannot be discouraged when addressing those challenges head on and not getting any recourse.…

There are countless similar definitions of leadership; my personal take on the subject is “Achieving a common goal while taking care of the crew.” There have been numerous influences on my leadership style throughout my career; most positive and a few that couldn’t lead their way out of a cardboard box. The first two members who were the most impactful and had the most influence were: QMC Glenn Lamonte (retired BMCM) and CDR Patrick Culver. Both of these men were exceptional operators who also took great care of their crew; they had the ability to listen, earned the respect of their superiors and subordinates, delegated responsibility and encouraged growth while taking charge of whatever emergent situation arose. Another poor leader whom I…
