While she is walking her dog she meets Nate, the boy who lives in the next house over. They start to talk and they soon become friends. Lucy finds out that all Granny Relda wants to do is watch the loons, but she cannot get in the boat to go out to see the loons. Lucy begins to think of ways she can help. She finds out about the photography contest her dad is judging and decides that if she wins she is going to use the prize money to buy something that will help Granny Relda get out on the lake to see the loons. Lucy tells Nate what her plan is and he says he will help her. They enter the contest under Nate’s name. Between taking pictures for the contest, Lucy and Nate go out on the lake to make sure the loons are okay and that they are safe. When Lucy’s dad finds out she took the pictures he tells her she cannot participate. So Lucy and Nate have to find a different way to help Granny Relda see the loons. Lucy’s parents decide along with Nate’s family to rent a pontoon boat so that Granny Relda is able to get a boat to see the loons.
