While there has been a mass movement of natural hair acceptance amongst Black women, some find that a relaxer is still the way to go. Relaxed hair offers a level of convenience and can help Black hair get as straight as possible, but they can also cause a lot of damage if the application is applied improperly. Be sure to follow the directions below if you choose to relax your hair at home.
First, you will have to select the right formula. The strength you use is determined by the texture of your hair. There are kiddie relaxers, they are much milder, mild relaxers and super relaxers. Super relaxers are to be avoided, unless a stylist is going to apply the application, they are incredibly strong and can be harsh on Black hair. Begin at the section you started with when applying the relaxer. You can use the back of the comb for this as well. Just run the flat spine of the comb along the hair. Repeat this in all four sections, twice. The application has to set on the hair for a certain amount of time. You should refer back to the box because each formula has different setting times. Your scalp will start to tingle, this is normal, it means the relaxer is now straightening the root of your hair. If the relaxer starts burning before the set time, you should immediately rinse the relaxer out with lukewarm water.
