The world of hair extensions is a large and socially excepted trend that all ethnicities try at least one point and time in their life. The hair industry and hair extension companies have created a worldwide buzz that screams a billion dollar industry. Wearing wigs, weaves, clip on extensions, and hairpieces is an easy way to transform your hair from dull and thin too thick and glamorous. The weaving and hair extension installation process can take hours to complete. The process can vary however depending on the amount of hair being used, the style the client is looking for, and how much hair the client has. As a consumer of virgin human hair the question is something that I think people should know. Although I have asked myself this question before I haven’t taken the time to do the research until now. By doing this essay I believe I will find the answer. In different parts of the country, women donate their hair for money to provide food or clothing for their families. Some women don’t have a choice when it comes to donating hair. On average each women will donate about 10ounces of hair in exchange for money. Or no compensation at all. In India there has been an estimated of 2,000 tons of temple hair each year. Women use donating hair as a method to provide for their families. In some cases this is a better option than participating in sex trafficking or prostitution. So this makes the human hair donation business a very vigorous one. Indian human hair comes from Indian temples where many women and children gather and stand in line to donate their hair. Sometimes the waiting process can take hours. The temples will then hold a private auction for hair vendors and hair suppliers that will then purchase the hair. The highest bid take the hair. People spend so much time in the hair salon so the topics of conversation have a wide range. While I was visiting a hair salon one day a women told her story about her relationship. She proceeded to explain that her husband of 14 years has never seen her natural hair. Although the women had a nice length of hair and texture of hair she proceeded to explain to us that she was only comfortable wearing weaves and that her husband had never seen her hair. The couple was married for fourteen years and not once did her husband see her in the natural state. I asked the women if she was confident with her natural hair and she stated “no, because she didn’t have good hair.” Whatever “good hair” meant to her. Society has formed an opinion on what they think good hair is or should be. The way people perceive the word “good hair” has been the downfall or some people’s confidence. Society and what we see in the magazines defines good hair as long, straight, and fine hair. If a woman has thicker or coarser hair she is not viewed to be as beautiful. This concept has been around for years and it goes back to slavery days, when women would only be considered beautiful if they were white or light sinned and had blonde straight hair. Sadly this perception has carried on for many years and while some woman struggle to be confident with this concept others thrive in society and enhance
