Gustav Mahler

Gustav Mahler was born on July 7th, 1860 in Bohemia, then a part of the Austrian Empire (citation). As a German-speaking Jewish man, Mahler came from very humble beginnings in a world where his very identity made him an outsider. After migrating with his family to the booming town of Iglau as an infant, Mahler was first acquainted with music through street tunes and the town’s military band, inspiring him to first play the piano as a mere four-year-old boy (citation). Although he was described as being a poor student in terms of academics, Mahler found a love for making music early on and wrote his first musical composition at the tender age of fourteen as an emotional response to the untimely death of his younger brother (citation).
Following this early attempt at composing music, Mahler was accepted as a student at the Vienna

During his time at his Maiernigg villa, Mahler composed his Fifth Symphony between 1901 and 1902. Like his First Symphony, Mahler’s Fifth Symphony received mixed reactions, with Mahler himself supposedly saying “Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance fifty years after my death.” Also like his First Symphony, Symphony No. 5 follows an unconventional layout in terms of switching around the traditional order of the movements; the first movement and second movement are flipped from the order in which they are most often written. It is not until the first half cadence from V/V to V that the listener feels how dynamic the movement is.…

Research Proposal: Gustavus Adolphus and Information Diffusion Upon writing to his cousin Maurice of Orange advocating for a ‘countermarch’ system, Willem Lodewijk concluded the letter by asking Maurice to practice the drill in private as it “-- may cause and give occasion for people to laugh.” Countermarching is the military maneuver in which rows of infantry take turns advancing and firing upon an enemy, only to be replaced by rank behind them which had already reloaded. From small intellectual origins, Countermarching otherwise known as volley fire, would grow into the staple maneuver utilized by all major European powers towards the end of the 17th century. Despite its popularity and universal application, Willem Lodewijk’s conclusion to his letter shows the demonstrates that the ‘revolutionary’ tactic was revived as military institutions across Europe had grown stagnant based on tradition. Classicists like Francesco Patrizi advocated…

Symphony no. 5 definitely stood out in all aspects of the piece to me. What I see as effective is how well the audience is drawn into the piece. From the moment this symphony begins, the audience is forced to direct their attention towards the music due to the full orchestra presenting the first tune in fortissimo and then directly moving to piano. The opening series of notes, in the pattern of short-short-short-long with fermatas on the last note, causes startling intrigue in the listener. Here, Beethoven defies the typical, slow introduction pattern.…
