Gun Violence And Gun Control

News comes today comes in many forms from a twitter update on your phone to the more traditional newspaper delivered right to your house each morning. Some news we find intriguing, while other articles we just skim over and think nothing of it. So why does some news catch our attention? Is it the shock factor, something interesting or is it just so horrifying you have to read it? Today one of the most controversial topics flooding the news is gun violence and gun control. It seems we cannot go a day without hearing about the string of gang related violence that happened over the weekend or the star football player of a nearby high school who was shot on his way home from school. Why is this something we should considered a need to know topic? Although gun violence is not seen as a major issue in most cities, in chicago it's at an all time high. According to the article, 500 people have been murdered this year and we are on track for 600, Numbers that chicago hasn't seen since the drug violence of the 90s. One of the news values displayed in the chicago violence article is controversy. According to the article chicago isn't the only city with growing murder rates, others are seeing a decrease in their murders. As a result for reasons like this and many other multiple talks of gun control have been in place. Do we enforce strict gun laws in certain cities or do we allow the second amendment to override our ability to do this? An issue this big if it ever comes to the point of being voted on will affect everyone whether or not they will want to buy a guy now or in the future. Some may ask if guns become difficult to get for criminals then who's to say they will not get them in some other way such as the black market. Which comes back to my point as this being a controversial topic everyone should know about. This article could also be connected through the news value of psychological proximity. While it may not seem interesting to some of us, an overwhelming amount of people follow it religiously. Weather it be a story on the kardashians, a story on kanye west or Taylor Swift's recent breakup, we love hearing about things that have little to no effect on our lives. Recently to our surprise taylor swift and her boyfriend tom hiddleston have broken up. Some of us may think this is irrelevant but as I said before many of us love to hear news on celebrities no matter what it is. Taylor swift is one of the most successful artists of our time and has had a history of many boyfriends which could have contributed as to why this was actually reported. One of the news values I noticed in this article were prominence. The other was more difficult to determine, entertainment doesn't really seem to fit in more than two news values. But if I had to pick one more i would say this particular article falls under controversy. It's made clear from the title of the article that prominence would be present. Taylor swift topped forbes chart of highest paid celebrities and her boyfriend tom hiddleston is a prominent actor who has appeared in many movies. Surely this would cause some buzz around the celebrity community, gaining the interest of those who follow the entertainment industry closely. Which brings me to why I chose controversy as my second
