The wheellock was a complex ignition system. It was more durable than the matchlock. The wheellock’s lock was a vertical piece of metal attached to a spring. Snaphaunce were produced in 1550. The snaphaunce is the earliest form of flintlock. The name snaphaunce was from the Dutch which meant snaphaan meaning snapping hen. They are known as having separate pan covers. Later they were combined these functions into one part. Miquelet, a Spanish-developed flintlock was the first to use a frizzen that was also a pan cover. The spring is mounted on the outside of the lockplate, making it different than later flintlock models.
