After the middle passage, their ancestors were considered very valuable to the Europeans. The reasoning behind their importance to the European people is that they knew how to successfully plant and grow rice. Thus, this group of slaves was known for working on rice plantations throughout South Carolina. Further, the Gullah people are famous for a plethora of things. However, they are most known for their unique dialect, and their strong connection to their African descent. Just like many other groups of people, the Gullah people have their own dialect. People all over the world visit South Carolina just to hear the dialect of the Gullah people and to learn about their culture. Their dialect is very closely related to the African language that their ancestors spoke. Also, the Gullah people are famous for their sustainabilty of the African traditions that were passed on to them after the middle passage. It has been proven that, “… some aspects of African culture survived the middle passage and continued to exist in the New World” (Patterson and Kelley). In problem posing education, the construction of knowledge emphasizes that inquiry is necessary to the human experience, and critical consciousness causes an increase in critical thinking and communication. Paulo Freire wrote that, “ ‘Problem-posing’ education, responding to the essence of consciousness-intentionality- rejects communiqués and embodies communication”(Pedagogy of the Oppressed). Hence, the video represents these concepts, because Caroline is conscious and completely aware of her culture’s history. She mentions that she is very proud to know about her culture and history, because she is able to teach the children about it. In result of her passing on her knowledge, the children will also become proud to be apart of the Gullah community. Similar to the methodology of problem posing education, she recognizes that her history is used as a starting point in her education. Also, in the video she explains how she has utilized the construction of knowledge. In the construction of knowledge, learning information is a mutual process. So, she has utilized this method of learning by traveling to different places and learning about other people’s culture.
