I arrived on scene at 2100 hours, approaching the crash traveling southbound on Guess road.
I responded to Guess Road for the Motor Vehicle Crash.
The Fire Department and EMS were already on scene
Vehicle In Motion:
The suspect vehicle, a Gray Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling southbound on Guess Rd. at a high rate of speed, when it crossed over the center line, ran off the road to the left, jumped the curve, struck two mailboxes, two garbage cans, a utility pole and damaged the porch of a brick house, coming to rested. I positioned Smith such that he was facing north in the outside lane of 3600 block of Guess Road. (All forward facing emergency lights on my patrol vehicle were deactivated at this point.)
Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN).
The first test I asked Mr. Smith to perform was Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN). I instructed Mr. Smith on the procedure and asked if he understood and he replied “yes”. For the testing I used my green pen light as the stimulus. Mr. Smith was not wearing eyes glasses. I checked his eyes for equal pupil size, resting nystagmus, and equal tracking. During the test, he had to be reminded once not to move his head and to keep his eyes on the light. I observed three of six clues for HGN; lack of smooth pursuit in left and right eyes, distinct and sustained nystagmus at maximum deviation in the right eye.
