INTENTIONAL POWERS
The response from the USA and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had the United States hunt terrorists, some killed, and others brought to a facility that our Navy has in Guantanamo, Cuba. Prisoners who have been cleared to leave have been waiting for years. President Obama pledged in his inaugurate speech that Guantanamo will be closed. This promise has not been fulfilled. Prisoners are resorting to hunger strikes. Afraid they will die, the military have been force-feeding them. The force-feeding procedure is done by strapping a prisoner to a chair and inserting a nose tube through which liquid nutrients are sent directly to the stomach. It is normally done in clean and sterile medical facility to persons that for one reason or another are unable to swallow. It is inserted once and the tube is taken when it has to be changed or when is not necessary anymore. But in a prison it cannot be left in place. It can be painful and cause many medical and psychological conditions. The pain from over insertion leaves some with bleeding through out the whole procedure. This amount is torture for individuals. Presently without any warning two times a day our military breaks into a cell full force and straps a person to a chair and forces them against their will to take liquid food. It is a ridiculous insurance policy, so we can say no one died while in the care of the United States. The number on the scale is more prevalent than the personal decision one makes for themselves. There are many religions that fast; no one is calling in the military to make sure they do not die. This very personal decision gets lost in the same way Press’s essay states “I’m right, you’re wrong. Or, worse yet, I know what’s right for America.” Many disagree, they fear these prisoners so they want to control everything they can possible control in this dead end merry go round. As Cline wrote, “Politicians are certainly biased and overtly so. They belong to parties and espouse policies and ideologies. “ Ideas of a solution are always tainted by your political orientation. Liberals want prisoners to enter the US prison system and have the same rights and penalties of citizens while conservatives think the prisoners should stay in Guantanamo or be sent back to their countries that do not want them or will not take them. Uruguay offered to take some but backtracked at the last minute due to fear of political repercussions at home.
