It led to the executions of 8 inadequately arraigned suspects and led the demise of this union New Orleans General Strike: This is when 42 local unions staged a strike involving half of New Orleans’ population. Only 3 days later was a compromise made securing the wages and working hours of the workers, but not the existence of the unions.

In this chapter Howard Zinn makes a claim that all populists, undoubtedly, and all white Americans were racist and nativist. This claim can obviously be modified by looking at countless examples of white Americans who did not have these beliefs and by closely examining the Populist Party Platform. To begin with, obviously not every single white American can be racist and nativist. Absolute claims are never completely true because there are always exceptions, except for death. In addition, the claim that populists held this belief can be modified by not looking at specific examples of populists were did hold these beliefs. In fact, the Populist Party’s platform in 1892 clearly explains as to why it wanted to limit immigration, which was in large part to protect the immigrants who already came to America form the corrupt, greedy monopolies. This clearly modifies Zinn claim as not all white Americans were racists and nativist, because there are always exceptions, and not all populist were racist and nativist, because a large part of its platform served to protect the people that nativist or racists would want to oppress and
