As a way to categorize and analyze verbal interactions between group members, the Group Development Observation System (GDOS) was developed (Griffith & Dunham, 2015). These are broken down into eight categories. The first one is dependency statements, and this type of statement communicates that an individual is conforming to the consensus of the group and seeking direction from others (Griffith & Dunham, 2015). This statement type displays compliance. An example would be the individual who does not offer any suggestions of their own, but rather agrees with whatever somebody else is saying.
